Unfacing the consequences

This week is on Psalm 130:7-8:

O Israel, hope in the Lord,
for the Lord exhibits loyal love,
and is more than willing to deliver.
He will deliver Israel
from all the consequences of their sins.

This Psalm is all about grace and forgiveness. The first part is the author telling us all about how much trouble he is in, and how great God is for forgiving sins. But the tail end that we're reading this week is really cool.

The Psalmist is talking about the nation of Israel, but we can read it in modern times as simply meaning the Church, which means you and me. We got grafted in, remember? So the Psalmist is saying "hey you, hope in the Lord. He will deliver you." That's a good message to hear, if you're in trouble like the Psalmist.

He says the Lord exhibits loyal love and is more than willing to deliver. We don't see much loyal love these days. When times get hard, people quit, divorce, unfriend, etc. But God keeps his promise to stay faithful and stay connected. When the Psalmist comes back and asks for help he doesn't deserve, God is more than willing to give him another chance and help him out.

Lastly, it says that God will deliver Israel (and us) from all of the consequences of their sins. I know this example doesn't apply to many of the people reading this, but imagine you got shot in the leg robbing a liquor store and the owner decided to not press charges for you to go to jail. The store owner forgave you, but you still have to live with the consequences of your sin in the form of a bad leg. But imagine the store owner loved you so much that he even paid for your leg to be fixed! It's still forgiveness, but something more somehow too.

So that's something to meditate on this week. God really loves us, and goes the extra mile to ensure we get put back on our feet when we fall.
