The gospel angel

This week's study is on Revelation 14:6-7:

Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

These verses take place in the book of Revelation, where God is speaking to John about the future and about the eventual end of the world. There is a set of three angels that John sees later in the vision, a gospel angel, a victory angel, and a warning angel. The gospel angel is the one we're reading about this week, and it's fascinating that God does what he does.

Imagine an angel proclaiming God's good news. Isn't that supposed to be our job? And yet God has created it anyway. Who can understand why? Flying in midair, this creature was telling people to fear God and give him glory for heavens, earth, and waters salty and sweet.

The gospel the angel was given to proclaim was the eternal gospel. God's love is eternal, so it would make sense that his glory and grace would be eternal too. Even in the end of days, even when it would seem like the game was up, and there was no chance to escape the consequences of sin, God had this angel in the heavens like a TV satellite, broadcasting the truth that it's not too late for his love. How cool is that?

But how cool is God that he can just create a creature to fulfill this one simple purpose? We don't know what it did before or after this, but in this moment, its job was to remind us, and everyone, of God's glory and power and mercy.

If something seems far-fetched or too elaborate for God to take care of, remember his gospel angel, in midair, proclaiming the eternal gospel for all of mankind. Could the God who created that angel and gave it its work miss a detail like the one you need?
