God is the loophole

This week is on 2 Chronicles 30:18-20:

Although most of the many people who came from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the Lord, who is good, pardon everyone who sets their heart on seeking God—the Lord, the God of their ancestors—even if they are not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary.” And the Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people.

I may have taught on this one before, but I was reading it yesterday and it stood out to me as a great testament of how awesome God is. These people had broken God's law and were deserving of punishment. They should have known better. But Hezekiah prayed for their forgiveness and God forgave them. He didn't have to. In some ways it may have been better for him to punish them. But God chose love.

The coolness is that this is in the Old Testament before people had met Jesus. It shows that forgiveness and mercy are part of God's eternal character. People were saved because Hezekiah called out to God and God decided to work with the people and accept them rather than punish them. God sets aside his issues and accepts us when we do wrong. We get another chance. That's cool stuff.
