Coming back

This week's fun is on Jeremiah 3:21-22:
A cry is heard on the barren heights,
the weeping and pleading of the people of Israel,
because they have perverted their ways
and have forgotten the Lord their God.

“Return, faithless people;
I will cure you of backsliding.”

“Yes, we will come to you,
for you are the Lord our God.

Grace is a lot older than we thought. These verses from Jeremiah took place quite a bit before Jesus died for our sins. God was talking about accepting Israel back after they spent a long time in idolatry and false religions. Israel is weeping and pleading for forgiveness.

God says "Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding." That's great news! If we start backsliding because we've lost our faith, we need only approach God for a cure. We don't have to keep drifting away or crying out to him and pleading with him. He'll take us back and set us right. If you want a reset, he's offering it.

Israel says "Yes, we will come to you, for you are the Lord our God." That's what we ought to say. There's no harm in coming to God. There is only good. If we've strayed, he wants us back. We've tried the other stuff. Let's return to our faith and approach our God while the offer still stands.
